In the Cree language the word for God
is not specific with respect to gender. But Cree, who are all Christians, generally
use the masculine pronoun when speaking English. I follow their usage when paraphrasing
their statements. In the text I generally also use the term "hunters," which is
often taken as gendered. It is the case that most Cree hunters are males. But
it should be remembered that many women also hunt, and that statements about hunters
apply to women as well as men.
