The stewards of several communities
were also trying to respond to the impacts and disruptions caused by the construction
of the first phase of the hydroelectric projects in these years. These impacts
included those foreseen by Cree hunters, such as flooding and the opening up of
lands to outsiders (see above), and others not foreseen by Cree or by governments,
including a new source of increased methyl mercury contamination in the reservoirs
and the downstream sections of rivers. See Orkin and Hazell (1991) for a summary
of impacts.
