This commentary is drawn from files of the McGill-Cree Project, a research
group that analyzed the impact of natural resource development and social policy on the Crees of north central Québec between 1964 and 1968. The project was headed by Norman Chance, then Director of the Programme in the Anthropology of Development
at McGill University in Montréal, Canada. The photographs were taken in the summer and winter of 1966 by Paul Conklin, project photographer. Funding for the research was provided by the Canadian Government's Department of Forestry and Rural Develop
ment [ARDA]; Centre d'Etudes Nordiques, Université Laval; and McGill University's Committee on Northern Research.
Those wishing to make use of the photographs or text for educational
