It is surely significant that Richard Cashin, the head of the fisheries union during the negotiations of the compensation package, resigned his post to accept the chair of a federal task force on the future structure of the fishing industry. The task force's final report (DFO 1993) largely endorsed the federal call for a policy of "rationalization" of the fishing industry in Newfoundland. The union (the FFAW-CAW) is also accused of selling out political in exchange for access to >:on~ro, over re-training and education programs for fishers and fish plant workers.
