Loss of Sea Mammals........

In 1890, Henry Woolfe, a whaler and Alaska census-taker, summarized the serioiusness of the situation in a government report:

Now the Natives along the coast from Point Hope to Point Barrow consider it a very lucky catch to shoot 10 walrus duirng the season, where formerly 500-600 were obtained. [Woolfe 1893].

Needless to say, by this time, commercial walrus hunting had been abandoned.
